The third edition was organised in East Berlin in 1951. The theme of the festival was “Peace and Friendship against Nuclear Weapons”. It was held at a time of increasing international tension between the Soviet Union and the Western powers. The festival was intended to showcase the young German Democratic Republic, formed in the Soviet sector of post-war Germany.
The West German police and the US military attempted to prevent international delegates from crossing into the western sector of Germany to attend the festival. In response, an operation was organised to smuggle young people across the country in small groups.
