Descripción
The motif of this poster has also been reproduced by the Museo Picasso in Buitrago de Lozoya, which houses the Eugenio Arias Collection, which contains a copy of “Avant la Lettre” that Picasso dedicated and gave to D. Arias, his friend and hairdresser. This copy was used for the production of this poster, although in different colours.
During the Spanish Civil War and afterwards, Picasso supported and provided financial aid to various refugee associations and to some individuals directly. He even let them use his studios in Paris for some meetings.
This very expressive poster shows, on the one hand, imprisonment, pain and suffering. And, on the other, the poster shows the sign of peace, the dove with outstretched wings, thus achieving a terrifying contrast as a symbol of freedom and peace.
