Descripción

The painting was painted by Picasso in Cannes on 25 March 1956. It is now in the new South Wales Art Gallery, Sydney.

Two editions were made for the same exhibition, distinguished by the text at the top of the poster listing the names of the artists in the exhibition.

The painter’s landscapes have the freshness of forms that arise spontaneously in the imagination, hidden among the words that illuminate them: hence their vivid, vibrant colours. This poster is a detail from the painting “Nude in a Rocking Chair”, which shows Jacqueline in the studio of “La Californie”, where she used to stay, totally absorbed in watching the master at work, who, by her appearance and her integration into the environment, made her his protagonist. Part of this dialogue is provided by the flat-coloured background that sets up the space of the room with the red floor: black on the left side, yellow on the right and the green in the centre that extends to both sides, and even penetrates to the far right of the “landscape” shown through the window, from where a single, splendid, solitary palm tree can be seen. The power of this exquisite detail has been skillfully captured by the designer, who has made it the sole motif of the poster.

It is interesting to see how the quality of a painting makes it possible for even a detail of it to stand out as an independent piece in its own right. And this is what happens with Picasso’s “Landscape with Blue Palm Tree”.
