Descripción
The poster was made following Picasso’s instructions to use as the subject of the design his charcoal drawing on paper and “Papier Colle” entitled “Bottle, Glass and Newspaper on a Table”. Picasso made this drawing in Paris in the autumn/winter of 1912.
Neither this poster nor its motif has been reproduced in other posters.
The painting featured on this poster, “Bottle, Glass and Newspaper on a Table”, was part of the famous collection of Marie Cuttoli and Henri Lauier who donated it to the Musée National d’Art Moderne in Paris in 1969. This work, made by Picasso in 1912, is unsigned. He used a mixed technique of papier collé, charcoal and gouache on paper.
This work corresponds to the pictorial period catalogued by some as Sculptural Collage and by others as Synthetic Cubism. This period reached its peak at the end of November and in the first half of December 1912. The work was completed after 4 December. During this period Picasso produced a large number of works with papiers collés. Thus, “the sequence of bottles marked a new evolution of graphics towards the sign.”
