Descripción
The identification of the Harlequin with Picasso and of the artist with the character of the Comedy is evident once again in this drawing, this work is a precursor to the “Self-portrait” that he made in 1972 and in which he seems to have captured the moment when he saw Death. This work, although lacking the dramatic impulse of the other, also reflects his growing concern about old age and the decrepitude and loss of power that accompany it.
The face records with Spanish courage how the skin deteriorates inexorably under makeup, the tiredness of the features, the loss of authority in the gaze that has become glassy. Despite the brilliant colors that the Master used, it betrayed the disillusionment that invaded him. But it meant that his life depended on continuing with his work, on not stopping.
