Descripción
Neither this poster nor its motif has been reproduced in any other poster. The motifs, drawing and handwritten text of the poster, imbued with Picasso’s peculiar sense of humour and a theatrical air, can be interpreted in different ways.
The central white drawing can be taken as a piece of ceramic in which the features of a smiling, mischievous face play with the letters of the text in keeping with the festive air of the composition. It would also be possible to see on it a mask, the sun or the moon, symbols of fun, humour and joy.
The white background of the plate (or of the mask/face) is combined with the white of the handwritten text and the dancing, curved calligraphy of the letters of different sizes, endowed with movement and figurative design to give a dynamic impetus to the entire composition.
Picasso’s imagination also plays on this poster with another element, the date, 1955, which is combined at the top with the calligraphy of the text and the features of the face, and is reduced to two figures: 55. At the bottom, the date instead takes on a particular appearance and is defined by oriental symbols invented by Picasso and which bear witness to the Master’s good humour.
