Descripción
Neither this poster nor its motif have been reproduced in any other posters.
To advertise his exhibition in Barcelona, Picasso produced a series of three lithographs to be used by the Sala Gaspar exhibition which was to be held in April 1961.
The third of the lithographs that Picasso prepared for the exhibition was used by the brothers Miquel and Joan Gaspar for the cover of the exhibition catalogue.
The lithograph on the poster has a similar design to that in the catalogue. Both show a human face, done in a semi-abstract style and using the graphic technique that Picasso loved so much. In this composition the artist played with calligraphy and colours, creating a festive effect and an image full of light.
Brassaï tells us that on one occasion in one of his conversations with Picasso the artist told him: “two holes are the sign of the face, enough to evoke it without representing it. Art is the language of signs.”
Commissioned by the Gaspar brothers, Picasso also produced two other lithographs, one of which was used on the cover of the catalogue for a second exhibition at the Sala Gaspar, also held in April 1691.
