    Description

“There is no such thing as coincidence,” Picasso declared. “Usually, everything is coincidence: the strange thing is naturalness.” This is what happened with the acquisition of the Château de Vauvenargues. Douglas Cooper, Edouard Pignon, Hélène Parmelin and Picasso were dining at the Château de Castille when Douglas Cooper mentioned that the Château de Vauvenargues, outside Aix-en-Provence, was for sale and that it was a good opportunity for Picasso to buy it. And so he did.

The Château de Vauvenargues was originally owned by the Clapiers, a noble family from Provence, and to this day their family crest is displayed on the façade. It later passed into the hands of the Marquis de Vauvenargues.
