Description

Interpretive representation of a lithograph by Charles Sorlier based on the right side of one of the preliminary sketches for the large painting “Jacob’s Dream.”

This poster was printed on the occasion of the inauguration of the Marc Chagall National Museum of the Biblical Message in Nice, on July 7, 1973, the Master’s birthday. Thanks to the initiative of Mr. André Malraux and the support given to him by General de Gaulle, it was the first time that a National Museum of France was dedicated to the works of a living artist.

Biblical Message, Nice.

If all love inexorably moves toward its end, we should, during our lives, tinge them with the colors of love and hope. In love lies the social justification of our lives and the core of all religion. For me, perfection in art and in life emanates from the Bible, which is its source. Without spirituality, the rigid mechanics of logic and construction bear no fruit. Perhaps young and not-so-young people will come to this House seeking an ideal amalgamation of brotherhood and love, as all my colors and lines have dreamed. Perhaps they will utter the words of a love like the one I feel for everyone. Perhaps enemies will no longer exist, and the not-so-young will build a world of love. And all of them, whatever their religion, will be able to come and speak of this dream, banishing all thoughts of evil or feverish excitement. I would also like to see works of art and documents of high spirituality from all nations displayed in this place, to hear their music. Is this dream possible? Yes. Because in art, as in life, everything is possible; at its root lies love. Marc Chagall
